How Important is Facebook Marketing for SEO?

Let’s be honest, the minute details of search engine algorithms remain a mystery to most of us digital marketers. There are also lots of discussions about the impact of social media on search rankings.

Lately, the overall opinion seems to be that social media does at least indirectly affect SEO.

"The impact of social media on SEO has, and probably always will be, one of the most talked about topics in the search industry," Ron Dod wrote in Search Engine Journal. “Specifically, whether social media really helps your SEO efforts. So does it? Short answer: yes.”

In 2015, Moz conducted a study on Search Engine Ranking Factors with 150 leading search marketers who provided expert opinions on over 90 ranking factors. The report shows that social signals are considered to be amongst the top 10 factors affecting search ranking. Social metrics would be the quantity & quality of Facebook shares, tweeted links to the page, etc.

Social media doesn’t have a proven direct impact on Google’s search algorithm, but there are plenty of correlations between social signals and search ranking.

For social media to impact SEO, it comes down to link building, boosting visibility, gaining traffic and reducing bounce rates.

So, it’s clear that Facebook marketing can have a huge indirect impact on search rankings.

Now let’s have a look at how exactly Facebook marketing affects your SEO and what steps you need to take.

1) Optimize your profile

You don’t just need to be on social media, you also have to do it right!

As you have seen above, your social media profiles can appear right under your website in search results.

So start with optimizing the basics on your Facebook profile.

For increased visibility, adapt your username and make sure that it reflects the name of your company. If the exact same name is not available, try slight variations. You find the settings to do so in the "About" Section.

This will make it easier for users to find your page through the Facebook search. Moreover, it also customizes your Facebook URL, which should look like this: www.facebook.com/yourusername.

Apart from your username, make sure to fill in all possible information about your business on the page. The ‘About’ section is crucial for searches. That’s where you also have to include relevant keywords, which we will get to in the fourth tip.

2) Get backlinks through social shares

Everyone who is even slightly familiar with SEO knows that link building is crucial. The more websites and high-quality pages that link back to your site, the higher you will rank in search engines.

While Google didn’t care about the quality of links a few years ago, the production of fake or low-quality links changed the search engine’s standards. . Today, backlinks are amongst the Top Google ranking factors and Google puts great attention to high-quality links.

Social sites have high web authority so links from social media are often considered high-quality links.

The first thing to do is to add a working link to your website on all your social media profiles! Also make sure to connect your Facebook page to your other social accounts and your website.

Second, post any articles, news or product updates from your website to your social media profiles. That way you create some backlinks yourself and if your content is valuable, people will share it.

3) Grow your audience and make them engage with your content

Facebook "likes" increase visibility for your site. However, they don’t have a direct impact on your Google ranking. Shares, on the other hand, are similar to backlinks and can impact your ranking. Facebook likes and shares coming from popular pages have a stronger influence for better ranking (see factors 157-159).

So, try to grow your followers steadily! Be sure to stay away from buying fake followers, that won’t help. Instead, grow a high-quality audience and encourage them to share, engage and interact with you and your content.

4) Improve visibility with keywords

Keywords are absolutely essential for many different marketing activities online. They play a major role for your website, blog, ad campaigns and also for your social content.

Add relevant keywords to the about section of your Facebook page and in your posts. Your page and content will then show up in relevant searches.

Let’s say you search for chatbots on Facebook. As you can see, Onlim’s posts and company page show up.

5) Optimize your Content

Imagine people who are looking for specific topics on Facebook. When they find your posts offering great information about the topic they are searching for, they will engage with and might even share your content.

But first, they have to find your content through the keywords that you use. It’s worth mentioning this again, as the right keywords can make all the difference for your visibility and engagement.

When crafting your posts, you should also include a Call To Action (CTA) asking users to do something specific. This could be a "Read more", “Watch now” or even “Tell us…”. You want them to interact and engage with your content.

Constant changes to SEO algorithms make it very challenging to keep up with best practices, as all digital marketers understand.

While a social media presence on Facebook and other platforms don’t have a direct impact on SEO, it certainly has a huge impact on search ranking in indirect ways.

Hope those tips help you take action and boost your SEO with Facebook marketing.
