La Fondazione Banco Alimentare Onlus opera per limitare lo spreco alimentare e combattere la fame in Italia attraverso il recupero delle eccedenze di produzione agricola, industriale, della Grande Distribuzione Organizzata e della ristorazione collettiva organizzata e la successiva ridistribuzione a strutture caritative che si occupano di assistenza e di aiuto ai poveri, agli emarginati e, in generale, a tutte le persone in stato di disagio e di bisogno.

La Rete Banco Alimentare quindi recupera e ridistribuisce alimenti ancora ottimi e non scaduti, che sarebbero destinati alla distruzione, se non recuperati, in quanto non più commerciabili. Salvati dallo spreco, gli alimenti riacquistano valore e diventano ricchezza per chi ha troppo poco.

Le principali fonti di approvvigionamento di alimenti sono: l’Ortofrutta, l'Industria Agro-alimentare, la Grande Distribuzione Organizzata, la Ristorazione Collettiva e l'Unione europea (attraverso l’Agenzia per le Erogazioni in Agricoltura - AGEA).

Nel 2013, grazie al lavoro di oltre 1.700 volontari, è stato possibile recuperare e salvare dalla distruzione 62.826 tonnellate di alimenti perfettamente commestibili e 790.912 piatti pronti; inoltre sono stati raccolti 9.828 tonnellate di prodotti alimentari.
